Gord Hume is recognized as one of Canada’s leading experts on Municipal Cultural Planning and Creative Cities. Gord is the author of two important books on municipal government: “Cultural Planning for Creative Communities”, published in 2009, is already in its third printing and is in eight countries around the world.
He is also the author of the 2010 book “The Local Food Revolution”, the first book to investigate how food has shaped municipalities. Either book may be ordered at www.municipalworld.com/Bookstore. He is a contributing author to “Rediscovering the Wealth of Places”, and has written numerous articles for magazines and newspapers on the creative city movement. Gord is a well-respected speaker at many national conferences and seminars, and has spoken to municipalities from coast to coast.
Gord is serving his fourth consecutive term on London City Council. In 2004 he chaired London’s Creative City Task Force and produced what has been called the finest Creative City report in Canada. He now chairs London’s Creative City Committee, the first such permanent city council committee in Canada. Gord has helped municipalities in Canada and the United States with their own Municipal Cultural Plans.
He is the Chair of Ontario Municipal Cultural Planning Inc. MCPI is an innovative partnership of seven Ontario government ministries, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, innovative towns and cities and the private sector. MCPI assists municipalities with cultural planning.
Gord is the President of his own consulting company, Hume Communications Inc. that provides assistance to government and community groups about Municipal Cultural Planning. Gord is also a Senior Associate with the Canadian Urban Institute in Toronto.
Gord’s business background has been equally impressive. He has been in the media industry for thirty years, winning two “Broadcaster of the Year” awards plus many other national and international awards, was the founding Publisher of what became Canada’s largest independent community newspaper, founded Symphonia Canada, produced three record albums, wrote and produced several radio and television programs, and was the mentor to Canada’s first Miss Universe.
He is a member of the London Police Services Board and many other civic boards and commissions. He is a Past President of the London Chamber of Commerce, former Chair of the Parkwood Hospital Foundation, Chair of the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging, and has served with many other community organizations.
