Chair of the London Public Library Board for an unprecedented four year-term. During that time Gord led the renaissance of the library system. It was his idea to buy the Bay and convert it into our new downtown library, an achievement that has drawn acclaim across North American library observers. The project came in on budget, and the public responded magnificently by donating over $5M for the project. Gord also steered the board through difficult decisions on refurbishing the branch system. The end result is that London's library system has gone from one of Canada's most inadequate and technologically-backward systems to one of North America's finest library systems; one that is a leader in technology and public service. Having these library resources is critical to the thousands of Londoners who don't have home computers and need access for school projects, for seniors accessing the Internet and more. It is critical that London not become a city of information 'have and have-nots'. London's library system today is state of the art, technologically advanced and fully accessible.
