As Chair of this innovative task force which Gord created, there was a remarkable amount of work done in eight months to research, consult and write this report--all done without paid consultants! The end product has won acclaim from across Canada and the US, and former Winnipeg Mayor Glen Murray has repeatedly called it "the finest Creative City report in Canada." Communities from Fresno, California to Saint John, New Brunswick have come to Gord for help with their reports. The report sets out a unique vision and action plan for London to progress in the 21st century. It offers opportunities to keep our students and bright young people in The Forest City; it outlines to Londoners steps to create our economic future and prosperity, and challenges Londoners to change how we think. The report has galvanized the city's arts, cultural and heritage communities and for the first time has put them on Council's priority list. The 2006 city budget allocated significant new resources to assist these wonderful organizations that contribute so much to the heart and soul of London, and helps our city to be a cultured, civilized and highly liveable community. The CCTF report is a bold, exciting vision for our community and is the foundation for future growth in the arts as well as our city's economic direction. And now with the CCTF guidelines, we're working to improve urban design in new housing projects, increase the tree canopy in London, and building more liveable neighbourhoods throughout our city.
