Gord has served on all three Standing Committees, as well as many other committees, boards and commissions. He has earned the respect of his colleagues, city hall staff, and the broader community. Gord doesn't seek headlines--he goes about his job quietly, efficiently and effectively. He solves problems for people. His leadership on Council is respected and acknowledged. As one Council member noted, "Gord always seems to have the answer when Council gets in difficulty." Gord is noted for that clear thinking and courageous statements.
Gord is dedicated, respected and admired by astute council observers. As a senior said recently, "When my ward councillors wouldn't return my phone calls, Gord did--and he solved my problem within 48 hours."
In his nearly nine years on Council, Gord has never missed a City Council meeting.
It is easy to talk and promise a lot during an election campaign; much harder, but perhaps more importantly, is the demonstrated ability to take courageous stands on difficult issues, to show leadership for the city, and to put aside the often intense pressure tactics of vocal but small, one-issue groups. It is very easy to succumb to a few people waving placards in the gallery at Council Chambers during a vote at Council, or to flip-flop on a council member's position in the face of media or public scrutiny... it is more difficult to look them in the eye, tell them why you believe this policy or position is correct, and then vote in the best interest's of Londoners. Gord has repeatedly proven his strength, courage and dedication to our city.
